About sugar
Sugar, or live resin sugar, is a solvent-based concentrate that contains small THCA crystals suspended in an aromatic and flavorful terpene-rich sauce. It's thick, grainy, and sticky, and somewhat resembles brown sugar.
So, is sugar the same as diamonds in sauce? Not exactly. While sugar is similar in composition to diamonds in sauce, the extraction method for sugar is quicker, and, unlike with diamonds in sauce, the sauce and crystals never separate during extraction.
Live resin sugar is made by extracting cannabinoids from flower, purging residual solvents, and aging the extract until the THCA crystals form in the terp sauce, resulting in the final product.
The combination of high THC content and rich aroma and flavor makes sugar a good choice for cannabis enthusiasts who don't want to sacrifice one for the other.
Sugar typically contains anywhere from 60% to 90% THCA, which is converted to THC when decarboxylated (or heated), whether through dabbing, vaping, or smoking.
How to consume sugar
For dabbing: You'll need a dab tool and a dab rig to dab live resin sugar.
For enhanced smoking: Sprinkle a little sugar on top of flower in a bowl, joint, or bong for an enhanced smoking experience.
For convenient vaping: Pre-filled vape pens and liquid sugar vape cartridges are available on Weedmaps from your local dispensary.
For homemade edibles: Decarb sugar by popping it in the oven for about 30 minutes at 240°F. Then add it to the other ingredients and follow the recipe as normal.
Dosing tip: Whether you're dabbing or smoking, it's best to start with a rice grain-sized dose or less. You can always add more, depending on tolerance and desired effects.
Frequently asked questions
Sugar should be stored in an airtight glass container in a cool, dry, dark place. While it's safe to refrigerate it for long-term storage, be wary of freezing it — if not done correctly, your sugar can change texture, crystallize, and even get moldy.
While both sugar and diamonds in sauce are high potency concentrates made up of THCA crystals and terp sauce, the main difference is the consistency and extraction process.
Sugar contains smaller crystals, giving it a gritty texture like brown sugar or wet sand. It is made through a shorter process. The extract is subjected to conditions that often allow sugar to be ready in a shorter time. During the process, crystallization is less structured, and the crystals never separate from the terp sauce, resulting in the wet sugar consistency.
Diamonds in sauce contain chunkier, dry crystals in terp sauce, and the extraction process takes slightly longer than sugar. The THCA molecules go through a process called winterization, where they crystallize and separate from the sauce over the course of 24 to 48 hours.
Both sugar and weed-infused sugar are cannabis products that will get you high, but they are vastly different, both in production process and composition.
Sugar cannabis concentrates are solvent cannabis extracts made from either flash-frozen plant material that's been frozen immediately after harvest or dry material. The flower is extracted using a chemical solvent, like butane or propane, at low temperatures, then the extract is purged and aged until THCA crystals form in terp sauce.
Weed-infused sugar, or weed sugar, is a type of edible rather than a type of cannabis concentrate. It's typically made by combining decarboxylated high-quality cannabis flower and a grain alcohol, like Everclear. The mix is put in a jar and shaken every five minutes for about 20 minutes, then strained of the flower, sugar is added to the strained alcohol, and then it's baked in the oven until the alcohol evaporates. The result is weed-infused sugar that can be used in baked goods, as a topping, or mixed into snacks and desserts.
It all depends on the terpenes present in the cannabis plant the sugar is made from, which are retained in the terp sauce portion of the sugar. The terpene sauce can taste anywhere from earthy to spicy to sweet. For example, if the strain of flower used is Runtz or Zkittlez, your sugar will likely taste sweeter.
If the sugar comes from OG Kush or Green Crack, it will have an earthier flavor profile. Depending on the terpene content and retention, the flavor can be stronger or weaker. If there are more terpenes, you can expect a more robust and complex cannabis experience in your sugar and a slightly weaker but still noticeable flavor if there are fewer terpenes.
