Everything you need to know about the Focus V Carta 2

Focus V is known for its high-quality e-rigs and dab tools, which make using concentrates easy for cannabis consumers of all levels. Recently, they created a newer, updated version of the Carta 2. Read our Focus V Carta 2 review to find out everything you need to know before you decide whether to update from the original Carta to this newer model.

What is the Focus V Carta 2?

Focus V's Carta 2 is an electronic dab rig. Specifically, it's a smart rig since it features Bluetooth app capabilities that unlock a whole world of customization. It's an excellent portable dab rig for people who want big-time rips while on the go, though many choose to use it at the crib.

How do you use the Focus V Carta 2?

This rig is designed like your typical e-rig with a base, chamber, and atomizer. It has three main control buttons: up, power, and down. Inside the rig, a frosted percolator lights up when the device is in use.

The Carta 2 package contains:

  • Carta 2 smart rig
  • Intelli-Core (atomizer) for oil
  • Intelli-Core cap and sleeve
  • Shoulder carrying case
  • Travel silicone stopper
  • Dab tool
  • USB-C charging cable

It also has wireless charging capabilities and can even be used to vape flower. However, both the wireless charger and dry herb atomizer are sold separately.

To use the Carta 2:

  1. Detach the bubbler by twisting it away from the unit's base
  2. Fill the bubbler ⅔ full with water
  3. Align the hole at the bottom of the bubbler with the hole on the base to reattach it
  4. Screw in the heating element for the concentrate
  5. Press the power button five times to turn it on
  6. Select your desired temperature using the OLED screen's + and - buttons

Design

The Carta 2's dimensions are 7.25 inches x 2.65 inches — it weighs 14.9 ounces. The device's body is made of an ergonomic plastic polymer, borosilicate glass, and the atomizer is made of aluminum alloy. The inside of the chamber is made of quartz-glazed ceramic.

The Carta 2 comes in six colors: Black, Clear (the best option for enjoying its light show elements), Grape, Mint, Midnight, and Forest. The standard Black Carta 2 costs $350, while the other options cost $375.

Features

The Carta 2 features a larger atomizer than the first edition of the e-rig, with a 360-degree heating element and optimized airflow. An OLED screen displays everything, including the dab temperature, session length, battery status, how many dabs you've hit, LED presets, and temperature presets.

In addition to its sleek design, the Carta 2 comes with oil and herb Intelli-Core atomizers that feature an innovative heating profile, providing maximum vapor production and never-before-seen levels of customization and control.

Additionally, the device works with the Carta Browser app to become highly customizable. The OTA technology allows you to download and run the latest software update.

Temperature settings and battery life

The Carta 2 heats to its highest temperature setting in 30 seconds for a session length of 20 - 60 seconds.

Recommended temperature range for concentrates:

  • 380°F
  • 420°F
  • 500°F
  • 635°F

Recommended temperature range for flower:

  • 275°F
  • 340°F
  • 350°F
  • 370°F

The battery life goes from dead to full in about 90 minutes. You can get about ten sessions to a charge, which is lower than many of the Carta 2's competitors, but that's okay if you're primarily using the device at the crib since you can use it while charging.

How do you clean the Focus V Carta 2?

Some disassembly is required for cleaning the Carta 2, from the atomizer to the glass top to the base.

To start, you'll need:

  • 70% - 90% Isopropyl Alcohol
  • Cup or container
  • Timer
  • Paper towel
  • Funnel
  • 50% Isopropyl Wipe
  • Cotton swab or Q-tip

Step 1

First, pour the 70 - 90% Isopropyl Alcohol into a cup or container before disassembly.

Step 2

Clean the Intelli-Core for oil, beginning with the atomizer.

Detach the atomizer from the base by gripping the lower cylinder and rotating it counterclockwise. If your atomizer is stuck, do not force it off. Heat the device on the lowest setting to loosen it, then remove it when the atomizer cools to room temperature and is safe to the touch.

Step 3

Remove the protective silicone cover and the tether for the carb cap. When all of the silicone accessories are removed, place the atomizer into the Isopropyl Alcohol.

Step 4

Set your timer for five minutes. Afterward, give the cup of alcohol a shake and remove the items.

Step 5

After drying completely using a paper towel, keep it aside in a warm or sunny spot for 1 - 2 hours until it is completely dry. Ensure there is no moisture left before putting it back together.

Step 6

Clean the glass top.

Grab the funnel, insert it into the mouthpiece of the glass top, and pour in the Isopropyl Alcohol just over the perks. Place your finger over the mouthpiece and shake for 30 - 60 seconds.

Step 7

Empty the Isopropyl Alcohol into your container and place the glass top — standing upright — into the container. This will eliminate any leftover wax at the bottom portion of the glass top.

Allow the glass lid to soak for 1 - 5 minutes, depending on the quantity of reclaim. Rinse the top with water until all Isopropyl Alcohol is removed.

Step 8

Clean the base.

Clean the atomizer connection points using isopropyl wipes that are 50% alcohol. Pay special attention to the gold contact pin and ensure no wax residue.

Step 9

Clean the airpath by using a cotton swab or Q-tip soaked in alcohol.

Avoid pouring any liquids on the outside of the base; if it gets wet, dry it promptly.

Step 10

Reassemble the Carta 2.

Note: Please be aware that if you experience crackling sounds when using the atomizer after cleaning it with Isopropyl Alcohol, stop the session immediately and ensure that the atomizer is thoroughly cleaned and dried.

Carta 2 consumer experience

I tested the Grape-colored Carta 2, and let me tell ya, that purple is eye-catching. The dabs I had were Green Lantern live rosin from Panacea, which had an earthy, peppery, gassy type of flavor to them. I hit the device at four different temps for this concentrate: 380, 420, 500, and 600°F. The 500 range seemed to be the sweet spot for the best flavor, but it's important to remember that it's all about consumer preference. I was focused on seeing what those Green Lantern terps were talkin' about more than I was about torching the oil and getting insane clouds.

From my experience, the Carta 2 is great for people who want big ass dabs. It especially rips if you skip the water and hit dry dabs — though I know this is not necessarily the “right” way to use the e-rig.

Is the Focus V Carta 2 worth it?

The Carta 2 is more challenging to pull out of the box and get to dabbing than other options, but once you understand the how-tos, it's a fantastic rig. The Clear color option is the best choice for maximum fun for this device. Its lights turn every dab session into a 4th of July celebration — minus the noise and chaos.

There aren't too many complaints that can be given to the Focus V Carta 2. The goal is to be able to load up fire dabs, hit a couple of buttons, get heat on them, and inhale vapor until that oil is done. That's the exact type of performance it gives you.

After the four sessions I took, I was super zooted and had to take a nap to come back to reality. So, for the hash heads that want a customizable experience from a portable device that will get you stoney, the Carta 2 is an excellent choice.
