NYC Diesel is named for the Big Apple and is famous for a different fruit entirely. It also comes with three origin stories, laid out below.

Origin 1: Soma Seeds, the Amsterdam seed bank run by breeder Soma, first bred NYC Diesel in 1997 and lists the cross as Mexican sativa x Afghani. The breeder says the starting seeds came from a friend in New York City who called it the best he’d ever smoked. This is the version behind the name’s reputation: ripe red grapefruit over fuel, and five Cannabis Cup trophies in the early 2000s by the breeder’s count.

Origin 2: A competing account of the same Soma plant maps it as a New York diesel bagseed mother crossed with an Afghani/Hawaiian male. The breeder and the cut are the same as Origin 1. Only the parentage on paper changes.

Origin 3: Zambeza sells a separate seed line under the same name, built from Diesel, Hawaiian, Shiva, and Northern Lights genetics. The breeder describes a sativa-dominant plant with bitter, lemon, and diesel flavor and a relaxed, energetic, euphoric effect at about 19% THC.

Whichever origin is on the label, NYC Diesel is its own cultivar and not a cut of Sour Diesel, no matter how many menus call it NYC Sour Diesel. It has also parented well over 200 documented crosses, Double Diesel among them.

On the Soma plant, the nose is the headline. Soma says that once you touch a fresh bud, you can’t smell anything else in the room. Reviewers add lime, chemical gas, and a musky finish, and grower reports describe hard, compact buds.

The breeder describes strong cerebral effects that ease into full-body relaxation, with a happy, talkative, sociable lean. Reviewers call it uplifting, clear-headed, and easygoing: the express train without the white knuckles. The conversation can run long. The playlist can go deep. Nobody has to catch the last train.

Soma’s NYC Diesel is a long-flowering sativa-leaner that makes you wait for it. The breeder’s current listing gives 12 to 13 weeks of flower, while older breeder figures put it at 70 to 84 days. Plan for the long end and let the trichomes decide.

Soma sells it as regular or feminized seed. Grower reviews report very high yields with a strong bud-to-leaf ratio. Three phenotypes show up: two tall, stretchy sativa types, one faster than the other, and a shorter, compact indica-leaning plant. Give it headroom and train early.

The Origin 3 line runs on a different clock. Zambeza lists about 65 days of flower, indoor plants of 120 to 150 cm yielding 450 to 500 grams per square meter, and outdoor plants up to 190 cm. Check which breeder is on the pack before you plan the room.
