Mazar is Dutch Passion's old-school collision of Afghan hash genetics and Skunk. Originally developed in the 1980s and updated in the 1990s, the cultivar crosses a prized Afghani with Skunk #1, taking its name from Afghanistan's famous Mazar-i-Sharif cannabis region.
The nose belongs firmly to the pre-dessert era: earthy hash, peppery spice, pine, citrus, and a little sweetness underneath. Dense, resin-heavy flowers carry the Afghan side of the family hard, while the Skunk genetics bring extra vigor and pungency. Mazar smells like weed from back when naming a strain after cake would've gotten you laughed out of the grow room.
Longtime smokers describe a euphoric lift that gradually gives way to heavier relaxation, with sleepy, giggly, and seriously hungry effects also in the mix. Afghani brought the hash. Skunk #1 brought the stink. Mazar made both famous.
Mazar generally flowers in about 8–9 weeks, producing sturdy, Christmas-tree-shaped plants with heavy lateral branching and dense, resin-rich flowers. The cultivar has a reputation for vigorous growth and substantial yields, with the branches often needing support as the flowers gain weight.
These plants are particularly well-suited for the Screen of Green, or SCROG, growing method, which uses a screen to maximize light exposure and hold back the tops of the growing canopy. The screen can be as simple as chicken wire, but it maximizes the growing potential for a higher resulting yield from the harvest.
