Zyn helped turn the oral pouch into a familiar ritual, and cannabis is now getting its own take on the format. Michigan-born KSHN calls its version “The Original Session Pouch,” a small fiber pouch that sits between your lip and gum and delivers THC through the lining of your mouth.

Each KSHN Pouch contains 10mg of cannabis-derived THC, according to the brand. The smoke-free format gives cannabis consumers another way to consume THC without lighting flower, hitting a vape, or waiting for a swallowed edible to make its way through the digestive system.

What is a THC pouch (and what is KSHN)?

A THC pouch is a small fiber packet designed to sit between your lip and gum. There's nothing to light, charge, or inhale. You place the pouch against your gum, leave it there while you use it, then discard it without chewing or swallowing the pouch.

So, where does KSHN fit in? According to the brand, each plant-based cellulose pouch contains 10mg of cannabis-derived THC, along with CBD and Vitamin C. The pouches are smoke-free, sugar-free, zero-calorie, vegan, and gluten-free, with xylitol providing the sweetness.

KSHN sums up the routine as “Tuck it. Suck it. Ditch it.” Inside the pouch, KSHN's Cool Processed™ technology uses what the brand describes as a water-soluble THC nanoemulsion. That formulation is designed for THC delivery through the mouth, which brings us to the interesting part: what actually happens once the pouch meets your gum.

How do THC pouches work?

Once a THC pouch is tucked against your gum, cannabinoids can move through the oral mucosa, the thin tissue lining the inside of your mouth. This tissue has a rich supply of blood vessels, which makes it well suited for absorbing compounds into the bloodstream. Peer-reviewed pharmacology research describes the sublingual area under the tongue as particularly thin and highly vascularized, while the buccal tissue along the cheek and gums also provides a route for absorption.

The route matters because it changes the path THC takes through the body. Research on oral mucosal delivery shows that cannabinoids absorbed through the mouth can partially bypass first-pass metabolism in the liver. That gives some of the THC a shortcut to the bloodstream while the pouch stays in your mouth. Any THC that gets swallowed still travels through the digestive system and undergoes first-pass metabolism.

That difference becomes especially useful when comparing a pouch with an edible, since the route THC takes affects how quickly its effects can begin.

How do THC pouches compare to edibles?

The biggest difference between a THC pouch and an edible is the route THC takes through your body. When you swallow an edible, THC travels through the digestive system and undergoes first-pass metabolism in the liver. During that process, delta-9 THC is converted into 11-hydroxy-THC, a metabolite that research describes as roughly four times more psychoactive than delta-9 THC. That metabolism helps explain why the edible experience can feel especially potent.

Timing is another key difference. Clinical pharmacokinetic data puts the onset for oromucosal cannabis at roughly 15–60 minutes. Edibles tend to take longer because THC has to make its way through digestion first. Health Canada reports that edible effects can begin within 30 minutes to two hours. And the wait doesn't necessarily end when you first feel something. The California Department of Cannabis Control notes that the full effects can take up to four hours to arrive.

That puts THC pouches in an interesting spot among familiar cannabis formats. Oromucosal absorption can offer a quicker onset than swallowed edibles while keeping the experience smoke-free and discreet. Some consumers may find that timing easier to gauge, though the experience still varies with the person, product, and dose.

The pouch craze: from Zyn to cannabis

If the whole pouch concept feels familiar, it's because of the nicotine industry. Zyn helped make tucking a small pouch under your lip a recognizable habit in the U.S. By the first quarter of 2024, the brand had shipped 131.6 million cans and captured over 74% of the U.S. nicotine pouch category, according to industry data.

The format caught on well beyond nicotine. Pouches containing caffeine, nootropics, and ingredients marketed for sleep have joined the mix. Cannabis was a natural next stop. KSHN considers itself an early player in the THC pouch category, bringing cannabis-derived THC to a format people already know from nicotine.

And there are signs that people remain interested in the format itself. The U.S. nicotine pouch market grew about 40% year over year in 2024.

For THC pouches, though, the numbers haven't caught up with the buzz. There's currently no independent market-size estimate for the category. Industry data valued the related U.S. CBD pouch market at about $42.69 million in 2024, but that's a separate category. For now, THC pouches are best understood as an emerging format finding its place in cannabis.

How to use a THC pouch

Using a THC pouch is pretty straightforward. KSHN's instructions call for taking one pouch from the tin, placing it between your upper lip and gum, and leaving it in place. You can swallow your saliva normally while using it. When you're done, take the pouch out and throw it away. The pouch itself shouldn't be chewed or swallowed.

The part that deserves a little thought is how much THC you're consuming. The California Department of Cannabis Control recommends that consumers start low, go slow, since the timing and intensity of cannabis can vary from person to person. Each KSHN pouch contains 10mg of THC, so keep that amount in mind before adding another pouch.

KSHN organizes multiple pouches into what it calls its “Climb Chart.” Base Camp is 10mg, Cruising Altitude is 20mg, Elevation is 30mg, and Summit is 40mg. Those names show how the amounts add up as additional pouches are used. They aren't recommendations for how much THC you should consume.

According to KSHN, 10mg from a pouch may feel different from 10mg in an edible. That comes back to the absorption route we covered earlier. Some of the THC in a pouch can enter the bloodstream through the tissue in your mouth, while an edible travels through digestion and the liver first. Give the pouch time to take effect before deciding whether to consume more.

What's inside a KSHN pouch?

Each KSHN pouch starts with cannabis-derived THC. According to the brand, the plant-based cellulose pouch also contains CBD and Vitamin C and uses xylitol for sweetness. The finished product is sugar-free, zero-calorie, vegan, and gluten-free.

Xylitol is an interesting choice for something that sits in your mouth. Unlike sugar, it isn't fermented into acid by cavity-causing bacteria such as S. mutans, according to research on xylitol. You may already recognize the ingredient from sugar-free chewing gum, where it has been studied extensively. The European Food Safety Authority has even approved a cavity-related health claim specifically for xylitol chewing gum.

For KSHN, xylitol gives the pouch sweetness while keeping sugar out of the formula.

Who are THC pouches for?

THC pouches can fit a few different kinds of cannabis routines. For people who value discretion, the format has no smoke or lingering cannabis smell and takes little more than slipping a pouch under your lip.

They may also appeal to people who find edibles tricky to time. Oromucosal absorption has a quicker onset than swallowed cannabis, which can make the wait easier to gauge. For people who prefer smaller, measured amounts of THC, a clearly labeled pouch also makes it easy to know how many milligrams you're consuming.

And some people simply like the pouch format. Anyone already familiar with nicotine, caffeine, or other oral pouches will recognize the basic routine right away. With KSHN, that familiar format comes with cannabis-derived THC and no added sugar or calories.

Who's behind KSHN?

KSHN was founded by Nir Saar and a team with roots in Michigan's cannabis industry, including experience with DogHouse Farms. That background gave the team a close look at how people consume cannabis and where familiar formats like edibles can leave some consumers wanting another option.

For Saar, one frustration kept coming up: the timing of edibles. He described the goal behind KSHN as addressing “the wait, the guesswork, and the overshoot” that can come with them.

That thinking eventually led to the pouch. KSHN paired a measured amount of THC with a format that was already becoming familiar outside cannabis, creating another option for people who want a smoke-free way to consume.

Market traction and where to find KSHN

KSHN is beginning to pop up beyond Michigan, with New York among the first states in its expansion and more markets on the horizon.

Of course, cannabis availability can change quickly from one state to the next. If you're 21+ and curious whether the pouches have landed near you, you can find KSHN on Weedmaps or find dispensaries near you to see what's available locally.

As with any THC product, keep KSHN pouches out of reach of children and pets, and don't drive or operate machinery after consuming cannabis.
