CBD and Hemp Seed Oil for Hair Loss

  • Amino acids and fatty acids are essential to hair growth and can be found in rich quantities in hemp seeds.
  • Hemp seeds contain many biologically active compounds that support hair health, including a range of vitamins.
  • Some hairstylists are now employing CBD oil in their salons and spas.

Hair loss affects everyone in varying degrees with up to 100 strands of loss per day considered normal. Higher amounts of hair loss are not typical and may have hereditary, hormonal, or stress-related causes. If you are experiencing any of these kinds of atypical hair loss, you may have used shampoos or creams to stimulate regrowth.

CBD oil has frequently been in the press for its soothing effects on pain and anxiety. Some studies have also shown that the benefits of CBD oil may extend to people coping with hair loss. As many such hair loss remedies fail, could CBD oil be a possible solution?

Current Research

To understand why CBD oil and other hemp-derived products may be beneficial for hair growth, it is helpful to know what factors promote healthful hair. There are two key factors to consider, which have important differences; 1) nutrients in the diet, and 2) the topical application of CBD products. Amino acids, dubbed the “building blocks of protein,” and fatty acids are essential to hair growth and can be found in rich quantities in hemp seeds. The same omega-3s and omega-6s that make fish and nuts such as salmon and walnuts healthful may also play a role in nourishing the hair.

The following studies expand on these ideas to show how CBD oil may help slow or stop hair loss.

The Studies

A 2014 study conducted at the University of Seville in Spain found that hemp seed oil contains optimal levels of omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids that could make it useful for pharmaceutical and beauty products. Researchers also found other essential fatty acids in hemp seed oil, including linoleic and gamma linoleic acids. Finally, researchers noted the presence of minerals in the diet such as calcium, phosphorus, magnesium, and potassium, all of which may enrich hair health. However, it should be noted that these fatty acids and vitamins tend to be part of a balanced diet and more research is needed. Orally ingested hemp seeds may contribute to a balanced diet that is high in these beneficial fatty acids.

Studies such as these have introduced people suffering from hair loss, and the practitioners who treat them, to the advantages of hemp-derived products. Although there is an increasing demand for hair and beauty products that are made from other parts of the plant, specifically, the glandular trichomes that produce CBD, the strongest evidence for healthy hair specifically looks at hemp seeds in the diet.

Patient Perspectives

Ned Jarrett was concerned when his hair started thinning in his 20s. Now 34, Jarett noticed that the thinning has progressed, but he claims that CBD oil has offered some hope to what once seemed like an inevitable part of the aging process.

In a phone interview with Weedmaps, Jarrett explained, “I can’t say that I’ve gotten back any of the hair I lost, but my hair does feel thicker and it looks better. I definitely feel like it’s doing something good to my scalp. It’s given me more confidence. I never wanted to try Rogaine or anything like that, but CBD oil feels right.”

Jarrett said he bathes his head in CBD oil twice a week after taking a shower. While he doesn’t measure the exact amount, Jarrett estimates that “it’s about the size of a quarter.”

Jarrett believes that as long as the CBD oil continues to have these effects, he will not use any other treatment. However, it’s important to note that all existing evidence about cannabis supporting hair growth comes in the form of dietary vitamins, amino acids, and fatty acids found in hemp seeds, not through topical application of CBD.

The Belgravia Centre in London treats individuals who are dealing with hair loss. According to hair experts at the center, CBD “ may help to improve the condition of the hair in the same way following a balanced, healthy diet would. However, CBD oil is highly unlikely to treat a medical hair loss condition, especially if this is a genetic complaint — namely male pattern baldness and female pattern hair loss, both of which cause thinning hair anywhere in the vertex area from the crown to the hairline, in those affected.”

The Bottom Line

While we are not yet certain if hemp seed oil or CBD oil may be a remedy for medical hair loss, we know that hemp seeds are an excellent source of vitamins and essential acids that are critical components of well-balanced and healthy, shiny hair. That being said, there is no evidence to support that either oral or topical cannabinoids are effective for moisturizing the scalp or ameliorating hair loss.
