Northern Lights #5 helped set the indoor standard before modern hype had a marketing department. Its roots trace back to the Pacific Northwest’s Northern Lights collection and the breeding stock that reached Nevil Schoenmakers’ Dutch operation in the mid-1980s. By 1990, #5 had taken the High Times Cannabis Cup’s indica title. The number stuck for a reason.
The original Seed Bank selection circulated as a clone and breeding mother, also recorded as CI #5 F1. Its Afghan-heavy heritage sits at the center of the story, although the exact original parentage remains unsettled. Later seed lines from Authentic Genetics, British Columbia Seed Company, and Bodhi carry their own preservation and selection histories.
Sweet earth and old-school hash lead the aroma, with fruity citrus and herbal musk rounding out the smoke. Some selections lean tropical; Bodhi’s line can bring grape incense and evergreen. The profile has depth without needing a dessert menu.

The original #5 was maintained as a clone; later seed releases vary in stature and flowering time. Authentic Genetics’ regular-seed IBL lists eight to ten weeks, while Bodhi’s regular-seed selection lists eight to nine weeks and suits indoor or outdoor cultivation.
Authentic Genetics emphasizes broad leaves, consistent structure, and dense flowers. Bodhi’s open-pollinated line offers more variety, including shorter and taller plants, green and purple expressions, and different aroma intensities. Outdoor finishing dates and yields depend on the selection and growing conditions; the name alone does not guarantee a September harvest or a fixed yield.
