G13 has one of cannabis's all-time great origin stories. The problem is that almost none of it can be proven.
The legend goes that U.S. government researchers collected elite indica genetics from around the world, bred or selected G13 in a secret research program, and eventually lost a cutting when someone smuggled it out of the lab and into the underground cannabis scene. Versions of the story drag everyone from the CIA and FBI to researchers at the University of Mississippi into the plot. It's killer weed folklore, but there's no reliable evidence that federal agents actually bred G13.
What survives outside the conspiracy theory is an old-school, heavily indica-leaning cultivar commonly associated with Afghan genetics. Its exact parentage remains unknown, and decades of breeding have produced numerous G13 hybrids and preservation lines that make separating the original cut from its descendants even harder.
G13 smells like it came from the era it did: earthy, woody, skunky, and pungent, with peppery spice, pine, and citrus cutting through the heavier hashy funk. Some versions lean sweeter or bring out orange-like citrus, but this is old-school indica territory first and fruit bowl second.

G13's reputation for hitting hard has followed it for decades, which might explain why a secret government super-strain sounded believable in the first place.
G13's exact pedigree remains unresolved, with the original line generally treated as an old indica or indica-dominant cultivar rather than a cleanly documented modern cross. Most surviving G13 genetics today come through hybrids, preservation projects, and old clone lines rather than a universally accepted original seed line.
Plants carrying G13 genetics tend to stay compact and resin-heavy, with dense flower development and relatively fast finishing times. Modern G13 and Airborne G13 lines commonly finish in roughly 55 to 65 days indoors, with stout growth and heavy trichome coverage showing up across multiple versions. Because so many current releases are hybrids or preservation lines, plant structure, yield, and exact flowering time can vary considerably from one breeder's version to another.
