Chem Dog, the legendary strain now commonly called Chem 91, began as one of four seeds from a 13-seed batch that a Grateful Dead fan known as Chemdog sprouted in 1991. The other three produced Chem’s Sister, Chem Dog B, and a male that was discarded early on. Chem Dog D came from another seed in that same original batch, germinated in 2001. Also known as Chem Dog 91, Chemdog 91, Chemdawg, Chemdawg 91, Chem 91, and 91 Chem, its exact genetic ancestry has never been confirmed. The authentic clone preserved by Skunk VA is commonly identified as the Chem 91 SkVA cut.

Chem Dog's real claim to fame is what its genetics went on to produce. Chem 91 is widely recognized as a foundational parent of Sour Diesel and is also believed to sit behind OG Kush, although OG Kush's precise origin remains disputed. That influence makes Chem Dog one of the foundational genetic lines behind the Chem, Diesel, and OG strain families still dominating menus today.

The top reported aromas are pungent earth, diesel, pine, and citrus, with a taste that follows the nose closely.

Those who've kept Chem 91 in rotation describe a fast, cerebral charge with an upbeat, euphoric edge before a steadier body relaxation starts filling in underneath. The head high tends to remain lively rather than disappearing beneath the heavier finish, giving this old-school hybrid the kind of two-sided experience that helped keep the cut alive long after 1991.

Chem Dog is a hybrid known for growing tall and stretching considerably during flowering. Grow difficulty runs moderate to difficult, with indoor flowering generally taking 63 to 70 days. Outdoor harvest timing varies by climate. Expect heavy resin production and moderate to potentially substantial yields under skilled cultivation, though the plant's powerful diesel funk makes stealth growing tough.

The original Chem 91 SkVA cut is clone-only. Seeds sold under the Chemdawg or Chem 91 name are typically backcrosses, selfed lines, hybrids, or recreations rather than seeds of the original plant. Authentic clones may be available from cultivators preserving the verified cut.
