Bubba Kush

Bubba Kush is one of those strains whose reputation is considerably cleaner than its family tree. The cultivar is closely tied to breeder Matt “Bubba” Berger and the Florida-to-California cannabis scene of the 1990s, but decades of retellings have blurred exactly which genetics went into the original plant.

Berger had already been working with a plant known as Bubba before the strain we now call Bubba Kush appeared. After those genetics met the Florida Kush cut that became associated with the early OG Kush story, a standout offspring emerged and became Bubba Kush. Northern Lights and Afghan genetics frequently appear in accounts of Bubba's deeper ancestry, but the historical record isn't clean enough to present either as a confirmed direct parent.

Bubba Kush smells like the dessert era never happened. Earth, coffee, cocoa, wood, and peppery spice lead the profile, with a little sweetness underneath rather than frosting on top. The flowers tend to grow chunky and dense, often showing dark green to purple coloration beneath a thick layer of trichomes.

Longtime fans describe a deeply relaxed, sleepy experience with an initial euphoric lift that doesn't stick around forever. Bubba Kush earned its reputation on that heavy finish, and its influence has lasted well beyond the original cut. Plenty of newer Kush strains dress things up with candy, fruit, and cream. Bubba still shows up smelling like coffee, earth, and weed.
