Florida Medical Marijuana
Florida legalized medical marijuana in 2014 with the passage of the Compassionate Use Act. Initially, the Compassionate Use Act only allowed for the use of low THC cannabis for epilepsy and cancer. These medical marijuana laws expanded when then-Governor Rick Scott expanded the Right to Try Act in 2016, which added cannabis to a list of experimental drugs for patients with a terminal illness.
In 2016, Florida voters passed the Florida Medical Marijuana Legalization Initiative, which received 71.3% of the vote. This law effectively expanded the state’s medical cannabis program, amending the Florida Constitution to expand the list of qualifying conditions and establishing the Office of Medical Marijuana Use.
