LSD comes in roasted chestnut and strawberry, and the difference goes all the way back to the breeding room. Barney’s Farm named its earthy Amsterdam hybrid for the head trip. BOG Seeds had another reason to like those three letters: they spelled out LifeSaver Diesel.

Origin 1: Barney’s Farm crossed Skunk #1 with an Afghan indica from Mazar-i-Sharif. The indica-leaning selection took third place in the indica category at the 2008 High Times Cannabis Cup. Elev8 followed the same Skunk and Mazar roots in a different direction. A Sierra grower known as J kept making seed and picking the sativa-leaning plants. The line he passed to Elev8 smells like spiced eggnog.

Origin 2: BOG Seeds crossed its own LifeSaver with NYC Diesel to make L.S.D. The breeder called the strawberry-scented offspring his most sativa-leaning strain. It also pulled off a neat trick in the grow room: that lively head high came from a plant that could finish flowering in as little as 45 days.

In the Barney’s Farm jar, sweet musk gives way to citrus on the draw. The roasted chestnut comes through on the exhale and lingers after the Skunk bite fades. Elev8’s selection trades that nuttiness for warm baking spice. BOG’s ripe strawberry takes the family resemblance right out of the nose.

Barney’s Farm describes a euphoric, almost psychedelic headspace with enough physical weight to settle in for the evening. BOG describes his version as up and trippy. Both breeders put the action upstairs, but the Barney’s Farm cut gives the body a bigger vote.
