Mislabeled gummies

I ordered a pack that said a 10 pack online, and received only a 2 pack of gummies.

Had a lovely time here, the staff were so welcoming, friendly and helped me find exactly what I was looking for. Even saw they were doing a back to school drive, gotta love a community driven dispo.

A great addition to 5th Ave in the Slope

A great first experience. I'm a medical patient but I wanted to spread love for the first legit recreational dispensary in my zip. Staff is peppy, helpful and eager to please. Good variety and availability even though NY is still behind the curve on the number of licensed recreational grower/producers.

Poor quality and expensive

The cheapest 3.5g was $35 plus tax…almost $40. The nugs were so low quality and poorly grown. The buds were as light as packing peanuts and smelled like mown grass. They made a sound like styrofoam when I broke them up. The brand was “Live” I was pretty bummed…the pot wasn’t even worth 20 bucks. I won’t try this place again unless they have $20 eighths.

Hey — just to clarify, our menu is synced live with our POS system. What you see online reflects real-time inventory. If something sold out, that’s just timing — not a menu issue. And about the “mid” — we only carry licensed, lab-tested NYS cannabis, all OCM-approved. Nothing underground, nothing unverified. If you had a specific issue, reach out — we’ll review the complaint and make it right, as long as it is within OCM compliance. We stand behind our quality, always.

Who you’re dealing with

I wouldn’t recommend this dispensary to anyone. The quality of their products is terrible—everything feels cheap and poorly handled. The selection is misleading; they often don’t have what’s listed online or advertised in-store. Instead, they push customers toward the most expensive options, which are still subpar. To make things worse, the flower is dry and full of stems. If you buy a half-ounce or an ounce, you can literally feel the stems poking through the bag. It’s clear they don’t prioritize quality or customer satisfaction. There are much better dispensaries in Brooklyn—avoid this one.

I was a staunch supporter, but…

Hmmm... I would like to first say that the employees here have been great. They are knowledgeable and real. The manager or maybe owner has been rather nice to me. HOWEVER, there has been a lot of turnover and probing a bit further, the experience sounds like working for a hellish retail job like Gamestop or something. "Oh you had a relative that died? Well if you leave, don't expect that you will still have a job when you get back." Or another favorite: "Oh, you asked and gave management a very early notice of about seven or eight months that you will be going to visit family for the holidays? Well too bad. You have to work regardless of whether you have paid for a ticket to fly." The more I type this the more angry I get. I will be letting other customers know that this is how this place runs and until they stop being buttholes to employees I will be limiting how often I visit until there are some changes made. I will not tolerate employees being called "peasants" by management. Oh and this is one of the only dispensaries I've noticed that nickel and dimes people with change. Oh and one more thing: they have promised a rewards/point system. Still not implemented.

First time here, mostly only buy in California but live in Brooklyn now, so of course wanted some help picking out flower from new growers. The lady helping me didn’t know any of the strains, what her top shelf options were, and just handed me the iPad. I understand state laws don’t allow for staff samples or the ability to touch, but they clearly aren’t training here on any level.

THE MATAWANA STORY

Matawana is Brooklyn’s first Black Woman-Owned dispensary, which started in 2021 as a weed apparel and CBD company committed to the healing capabilities of cannabis. The Matawana Family has been a staple of the Brooklyn community for generations, and now we continue that legacy by opening the doors of our first ever brick-and-mortar store in honor of Donna Mata – devoted mother, fierce advocate, and the #1 Mata-you-Wana party with!

OUR FOUNDER

Leeann Mata is the founder and CEO of Matawana and a lifelong resident of Brooklyn. After receiving two master’s degrees in business and education while raising three children, Leeann began working in public health education, which led her to cultivating CBD and hemp products as health interventions. When marijuana was legalized in New York, Leeann knew she had to carry on her family’s legacy and get involved. Her family was previously touched by the War on Drugs when her father was assaulted by police for marijuana-related offenses, which inspired her mother Donna to become a passionate cannabis advocate before passing away in June 2023. Opening Matawana post-legalization has been a full circle moment for Leeann, and she can’t wait to reach community members all over Brooklyn with her product, passion, and knowledge of all things cannabis.
