White Widow is one of the strains that put Dutch breeding on the international map. Green House Seed Company introduced its version in Amsterdam during the 1990s, crossing a Brazilian landrace with a South Indian landrace. Exactly who created the original White Widow has been debated for decades, with competing accounts involving Green House, Ingemar, and breeder Shantibaba, so the safest history separates the documented genetics from the disputed breeder lore.

The Widow name starts making sense when the flowers frost over. Dense green buds can become buried beneath a thick white coat of resin, giving the strain the almost snow-covered appearance that became its calling card. Pepper, cedar, earth, and dry wood dominate the old-school profile, with sweet herbs, pine, and a little spice filling out the edges. Green House currently identifies myrcene, alpha-pinene, and beta-caryophyllene among its most prominent terpenes.

Budtenders hear it described as a two-stage ride, starting with a relaxed, hazy feeling before the cerebral side comes charging through with euphoria, energy, and a more animated buzz. That push and pull became part of White Widow's identity, giving it considerably more spark than its frosty, chunky flowers might suggest.

White Widow didn't take long to become cannabis royalty. Green House's version took first place in the Bio category at the 1995 High Times Cannabis Cup, helping launch a genetic dynasty that would eventually include White Rhino, White Shark, and an army of Widow crosses. Three decades later, White Widow is still one of the handful of strain names recognized well beyond the people who obsess over genetics.
