Lemon Jealousy comes from Laughing Farms What year did you grow your first plant? For background of how I became involved in cannabis...I was diagnosed with MS in 1973. There was little treatment in those days. The medical advice was "avoid stress" primarily. They suggested Valium which I didn't like. To that point I had been a relatively conservative young person, sorority type, didn't drink much and didn't use or think about cannabis. Shortly friends suggested I at least try cannabis. It was a life altering revelation that cannabis helped: neuro protection, stress controlling, an impactful sense of well being. Since the mid 70's, cannabis has been a staple in my diet, so to speak. I started "growing my own" in 1976. It was a liberal time in America and not close scrutiny for backyard gardens in Palo Alto. We growers have come a very long way since the seventies when most available pot was from Mexico and who knows what was in it or on it. Growing my own was and is the only way to control what goes into the soil, what goes on the plant, how it's cured, how it's stored. Even today I consume mostly my own because I know where it came from and how is was handled Describe the terroir of your farm? My farm is located on a south facing slope in the foothills between Ukiah and the coast at 2100'. Water is provided by an onsite well. The ranch land had been previously used for grazing and was logged but there are many trees. Fortunately, there had been no commercial chemicals used on the land. The soil is predominantly clay and needs some amending. The days are warm and the nights are cool during the growing season. Cannabis seems to like these conditions. There is often a breeze which ventilates the plants and prevents stagnant conditions which can allow pathogens to flourish. Most of Mendocino's early farms were in the hills with similar characteristics. Describe the top three things about your farm, terroir and/or farming practice that produces flower that indoor growers can not achieve.1. The main difference between sun-grown plants and indoor is that outdoor, full-sun, full-season is a natural process. When plants go through maturation from seed to harvested flower, they produce their full spectrum of cannabinoids, the "entourage effect" which is the goal for medicinal use. 2. Sun-grown, at least on my farm, can be grown fully organically without pesticides and fungicides. Indoor conditions rely on pesticides, fungicides and other applications, which may have "allowable" amounts, but who wants to ingest any of it. Less clean. 3. Indoor grows are completely environmentally controlled and grow clones; small plants in stacked racks. They do not develop much of a root system and are plants of the same strain, mono cropping, which generally means that if one plant is compromised, all plant follow, and more chemicals are used to combat the pathogens. They are harvested on a schedule at the same time, all to maintain the optimal crop turn over, churning out the greatest volume. There is no opportunity for individualization of plants as on my farm. I harvest when flowers are ready, sometimes 2 or 3 harvests on the same plants. Again, accurate ripeness will produce the most balanced cannabinoids. 4. I want to add the tremendous energy consumption required to produce indoor cannabis. Both electricity and water are required in far greater volumes to produce an indoor crop than a sun-grown crop! Do you do anything special to the soil you grow cannabis in? Yes, I test the soil at the beginning of every season. I add organic amendments to address anything that may have been depleted from the previous season., hand dug into the soil. I add compost produced on the farm. Describe the difference between the effect, look and smell of flower that grows from your farm vs an indoor grow. The general "effect" difference is that indoor typically is strain chosen for one particular cannabinoid, usually THC, for potence and a quick high. The high comes on quickly and then in 15 minutes it's gone. Sun-grown flower strains can also produce high THC potency but the other complete cannabinoid expression sustains the effect for a much longer period of time and gradually lessens. Sun-grown flowers and typically larger than indoor. In my experience, sun-grown fragrance is more complex with more natural, earthy elements, even the sent of other plants. Is your farm OCal Certified or Sun + Earth Certified? No, I have never sought external certifications because they can be time consuming and are expensive. I know my practices are squeaky clean and sustainable. I'm certain I would qualify for either system. What does organic mean to you as a cannabis farmer? Generally, organic means a naturally derived source, rather than a petrochemical base. What is the single most important thing you want people to know about the way you grow your flower? I have infinite respect and admiration for cannabis, each and every plant. I nurture their individual characteristics. I inspect them daily and render care as needed. I have a symbiotic relationship with my plants. I need them and they need me. I care more about quality than I do about quantity. I am passionate about growing healthy plants and they do the rest! Can't really choose one thing.
