Granddaddy Purple is one of the strains that taught an entire generation what purple weed was supposed to look, smell, and smoke like. Popularized in Northern California by breeder Ken Estes in 2003, GDP is most commonly documented as a cross of Purple Urkle and Big Bud, followed by additional backcrossing. Purple Urkle brought the color and fruit-heavy character, while Big Bud contributed the thick flower structure and production that helped GDP become more than another pretty purple cut.
