Durban Poison was making a name for itself long before breeders started stacking dessert strains six parents deep. Its roots reach back to South Africa and the port city of Durban, where local cannabis caught the attention of American grower and author Ed Rosenthal during the first big wave of international strain hunting in the 1970s.

The story gets properly old-school from there. Rosenthal brought South African seeds home and eventually passed some to legendary grower and author Mel Frank, who went hunting through the population for more resin and a quicker finish. Frank's work reportedly produced two important lines. His A-line became the foundation for the Durban Poison that spread through American gardens, while B-line genetics eventually landed with Sam the Skunkman and entered the Dutch breeding world, where Durban became part of the genetic mix behind Skunk #1. Forty-plus years of retelling have blurred some of the handoffs, but the South African blood at the center of Durban Poison is the real deal.

Durban doesn't smell like somebody raided the candy aisle and started naming phenotypes. Sweet earth and pine get cut with herbs, citrus, pepper, and the sharp anise or black-licorice note that can make a good Durban instantly recognizable. The flowers can pack on more density than their lanky sativa ancestry might suggest, but the plant still likes to reach, stretch, and remind indoor growers that its ancestors weren't raised under LEDs in a four-by-four.

People who've spent real time with this old-school strain describe a fast, bright cerebral high with energy, focus, and creativity right up front. But Durban Poison's real flex is bigger than the jar. These South African genetics crossed oceans, survived generations of selection, and eventually worked their way into the family tree behind Girl Scout Cookies (GSC) and the massive Cookies family that followed. Durban didn't just stick around long enough to become a classic. It helped write the family tree.
