{"id":15255,"date":"2025-07-15T16:10:28","date_gmt":"2025-07-15T23:10:28","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/weedmaps.com\/news\/?p=15255"},"modified":"2025-07-15T16:10:30","modified_gmt":"2025-07-15T23:10:30","slug":"marijuana-increases-sexual-desire-new-research","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/wmnews.wpengine.com\/2025\/07\/marijuana-increases-sexual-desire-new-research\/","title":{"rendered":"Marijuana Use Is Tied To 'Significantly Higher Sexual Desire And Arousal,' New Study Shows"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Marijuana use is associated with increased sexual desire and arousal, as well as lower levels of sexual distress, new research shows.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The report, a doctoral thesis out of Queen's University in Canada, includes two separate studies: an online survey of 1,547 cannabis users as well as a 28-day diary analysis of 115 individuals, 87 of whom were marijuana users, while 28 were infrequent users or nonusers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cMore frequent cannabis use was linked with greater daily sexual desire,\u201d wrote author Kayla M. Mooney. \u201cOn sexual activity days, participants reported significantly higher sexual desire and arousal on days they used cannabis compared to non-use days.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cAcross all study days (regardless of sexual activity), participants reported significantly higher sexual desire and lower sexual distress on days they used cannabis compared to non-use days,\u201d the study continues, noting the findings could help inform both sex therapy and general psychotherapy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As for the online survey, \u201cApproximately half of the sample reported sexual motivations for cannabis use, most commonly to enhance aspects of the sexual response,\u201d according to the abstract.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The new <a href=\"https:\/\/qspace.library.queensu.ca\/items\/8467e70b-f8f7-4690-abc2-8cc0967717fb\">report<\/a> \u2014 which itself calls the relationship between cannabis and sexual functioning \u201ccomplicated\u201d \u2014 adds to a growing body of research about the subject.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For example, late last year, a study found that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.marijuanamoment.net\/cannabis-infused-vaginal-suppositories-help-enhance-sex-for-women-recovering-from-gynecological-cancer-study-shows\/\">cannabis-infused vaginal suppositories seemed to reduce sexual pain in women after treatment for gynecological cancer<\/a>. Combining the suppositories with online exercises in \u201cmindful compassion\u201d offered patients even more substantial benefits.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe outcomes favoured the [combined] group,\u201d that research said \u201cin which sexual function, levels of sexual arousal, lubrication, and orgasm increased, and the levels of sexual pain decreased.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Earlier research also found that administration of a broad-spectrum, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.marijuanamoment.net\/cbd-vaginal-suppositories-improve-menstrual-pain-and-lead-to-lower-use-of-painkiller-drugs-new-study-shows\/\">high-CBD vaginal suppository was associated with \u201csignificantly reduced frequency and severity of menstrual-related symptoms\u201d<\/a> as well as the symptoms' negative impacts on daily life.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As for sexual fulfillment, a separate study last year found that while alcohol might be effective to \u201cfacilitate\u201d sex, marijuana is better at enhancing sexual sensitivity and satisfaction.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">While alcohol increased some elements of sexual attraction \u2014 including making people feel more attractive, more extroverted, and more desirous \u2014 people who used marijuana \u201chave more sensitivity and they are more sexually satisfied than when they consume alcohol,\u201d the authors wrote.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A broad <a href=\"https:\/\/www.marijuanamoment.net\/marijuana-use-linked-to-better-and-more-frequent-sex-study-finds-but-dosage-is-critical\/\">scientific review of academic research on cannabis and human sexuality<\/a> published last year concluded that while the relationship between marijuana and sex is a complicated one, use of cannabis is generally associated with more frequent sexual activity as well as increased sexual desire and enjoyment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That article, published in the journal Psychopharmacology, also suggested that lower doses of marijuana may actually be best suited for sexual satisfaction, while higher doses could in fact lead to <em>decreases<\/em> in desire and performance. And it suggested effects may differ between men and women.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Some advocates have cited the potential for cannabis to improve sexual function in women as a reason to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.marijuanamoment.net\/four-states-set-to-consider-making-female-orgasmic-disorder-a-medical-marijuana-qualifying-condition\/\">add conditions such as female orgasmic disorder (FOD) as a qualifying condition for medical marijuana<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As for men, the Psychopharmacology article noted that studies' findings \u201care conflicting \u2014 some suggest that cannabis causes erectile dysfunction, premature ejaculation, and postponed ejaculation, while others claim the opposite.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A 2020 study in the journal Sexual Medicine, meanwhile, found that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.marijuanamoment.net\/women-who-use-marijuana-more-often-have-better-sex-study-says\/\">women who used cannabis more often had better sex<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Numerous online surveys have also reported <a href=\"https:\/\/www.marijuanamoment.net\/marijuana-enhances-sex-and-masturbation-survey-finds\/\">positive associations between marijuana and sex<\/a>. One study even found a connection between the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.marijuanamoment.net\/legalizing-medical-marijuana-makes-people-have-more-sex-study-shows\/\">passage of marijuana laws and increased sexual activity<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Yet another study, however, cautions that more marijuana doesn't necessarily mean better sex. A literature review published in 2019 found that cannabis's impact on libido may depend on dosage, with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.marijuanamoment.net\/lower-doses-of-marijuana-may-be-more-effective-for-improving-libido-review-finds\/\">lower amounts of THC correlating with the highest levels of arousal<\/a> and satisfaction.
