The exact timing varies by device, so there isn't one standard number of seconds that applies to every vape.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A blinking light outside of a long pull can signal something else. Depending on the device, it may indicate a low battery, connection issue, short circuit, or airflow problem rather than the automatic puff cutoff.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wm-article-table-of-contents-header\" id=\"blinker-length-in-seconds\">\n\tBlinker length in seconds<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Eight and ten seconds are both used in current cannabis vape hardware. One <a href=\"https:\/\/abx.org\/abx-battery-instructions-how-to\">ABX battery cuts power after eight seconds<\/a>, while the <a href=\"https:\/\/active710.com\/products\/batteries\/active-seed\">ACTIVE Seed battery deactivates after a ten-second draw<\/a>. Other devices allow longer pulls, so there is no universal blinker length.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That means questions like \u201chow long is a blinker on a cart?\u201d or \u201chow many seconds is a blinker on a disposable?\u201d don't have one exact answer. Instead of watching the clock, watch the device. Social media turned the blinking cutoff into a visible finish line, making the technique easy to film, compare, and treat like a challenge.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The trend landed in a large young-adult vape audience. Among adults who currently used cannabis, one study found that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC12082860\/\">vaping was most common among those ages 18\u201325<\/a>, at 29.8%. Separate national data show that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC12026715\/\">past-month cannabis use among young adults nearly doubled from 2005 to 2023<\/a>. Those numbers do not establish who coined \u201cblinker,\u201d but they show the size of the audience that carried the term.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The audience grew, but the blinking light still said nothing about dose. That comes down to the pull itself and the hardware producing it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wm-article-table-of-contents-header\" id=\"does-a-blinker-get-you-higher\">\n\tDoes a blinker get you higher?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A blinker can feel stronger than a shorter pull from the same vape because it may produce more aerosol and deliver more THC. Reaching the automatic cutoff does not create a special boost, however, and draw length alone cannot tell you the dose. Oil potency, voltage, airflow, coil design, inhalation volume, and tolerance all shape the result.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">THC moves into the bloodstream quickly when cannabis is inhaled. Research shows blood THC levels can <a href=\"https:\/\/bpspubs.onlinelibrary.wiley.com\/doi\/10.1111\/bcp.13710\">peak within about three to ten minutes<\/a>. Fast absorption does not mean a larger pull cannot deliver more THC. In controlled <a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/7853169\/\">research on cannabis puff volume<\/a>, larger puffs produced dose-related increases in plasma THC and reported effects.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Holding the vapor in after the pull is a separate behavior. Controlled <a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/2554344\/\">research on breath-holding and cannabis<\/a> found little evidence that holding smoke for 10 or 20 seconds produced stronger reported effects than exhaling immediately. A separate study found that a 20-second hold <a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/2027922\/\">increased carbon monoxide absorption without consistently intensifying the reported marijuana effect<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Both breath-hold studies involved smoked cannabis rather than vapes, so they cannot answer every question about modern cartridges. They do show why draw length and breath-hold time should not be treated as the same thing. A blinker may feel stronger because it can deliver a larger hit. Holding that hit afterward has not shown the same reliable payoff.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wm-article-table-of-contents-header\" id=\"heat-oil-and-hardware\">\n\tHeat, oil, and hardware<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A long pull keeps the heating element active until the vape reaches its cutoff. Whether that produces excessive heat depends on the device, voltage, airflow, oil, and coil, but higher temperatures can change the aerosol and the compounds it contains.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Research on nicotine-style vape liquids shows that propylene glycol and vegetable glycerin can break down and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC8032854\/\">generate toxic compounds<\/a>, including formaldehyde, acetaldehyde, and acrolein. Those findings do not apply cleanly to every cannabis oil because cartridge formulations differ.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Cannabis-specific evidence still gives consumers a reason to keep the heat down. Researchers studying <a href=\"https:\/\/escholarship.org\/content\/qt0xb8h1fb\/\">emissions from heated terpenoids<\/a> identified acrolein, methacrolein, and other degradation products. A broader review of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.frontiersin.org\/journals\/toxicology\/articles\/10.3389\/ftox.2025.1568207\/full\">cannabis concentrate vaping chemistry<\/a> found that THC and terpenes can produce compounds including benzene, methacrolein, and isoprene, with emissions rising sharply at higher voltage in the tested hardware.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Heat can also affect the hardware itself. Researchers have identified <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC7571715\/\">nickel, chromium, copper, lead, and other materials in cartridge heating components<\/a>. A cannabis-specific aerosol study found that <a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/34705462\/\">chromium, copper, nickel, and smaller amounts of other metals migrated into cannabis oil and inhaled vapor<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Research on nicotine vapes also found that metal concentrations can <a href=\"https:\/\/pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/articles\/PMC9368615\/\">rise with power and puff count<\/a>. Cannabis cartridges are not identical to nicotine vapes, so those results should not be treated as a direct blinker test. They do reinforce one basic concern: running a vape to its cutoff keeps the oil and hardware under heat longer than stopping sooner.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wm-article-table-of-contents-header\" id=\"greening-out-after-a-blinker\">\n\tGreening out after a blinker<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Because a blinker may deliver more THC than a shorter pull, it can raise the chance of consuming more than you intended. \u201cGreening out\u201d is the slang term for the unpleasant experience that can follow consuming too much cannabis.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The experience varies from person to person. <a href=\"https:\/\/nida.nih.gov\/research-topics\/cannabis-marijuana\">According to NIDA<\/a>, large amounts of cannabis and products with high concentrations of THC can be associated with anxiety, fear, panic, an elevated heart rate, and other unwanted effects.
