It could mean you've developed a THC tolerance.&nbsp;Learn about the science behind cannabis tolerance and the ways you can prevent or reverse it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wm-article-table-of-contents-header\" id=\"what-is-tolerance\">\n\tWhat is tolerance?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Tolerance occurs when our bodies get used to a substance or medication after regular use; more is then needed to deliver the same effects as prior lower doses. Many medications and substances can cause raised tolerance, such as opioids, benzodiazepines, alcohol, and antidepressants. It's a central survival mechanism that controls essential physiological functions such as sleep, appetite, pain perception, etc.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wm-article-table-of-contents-header\" id=\"thc-and-cannabinoid-receptors\">\n\tTHC and cannabinoid receptors<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>THC mimics endocannabinoids by binding to cannabinoid receptors and triggering the same reaction. When THC \u2014 in the right dose \u2014 binds to the cannabinoid receptors in the part of the brain that controls pain, the sensation of pain decreases. When it binds to the receptors in the part of the brain that regulates anxiety, anxiety decreases. Amazingly, cannabinoid receptors are the most widespread receptors in our brains.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-up-regulation-and-down-regulation-of-cannabinoid-receptors\">Up-regulation and down-regulation of cannabinoid receptors<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The number of cannabinoid receptors can change in response to what's happening around them in the brain. Scientists call the increase of cannabinoid receptors \u201cup-regulation\u201d and the decrease \u201cdown-regulation.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Here's how each performs in the brain:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Up-regulation:<\/strong> Occurs in times of stress, inflammation, or illness when the brain and body need help getting back into homeostasis. For example, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.med.upenn.edu\/cbti\/assets\/user-content\/documents\/The%20role%20of%20the%20CB1%20receptor%20in%20the%20regulation%20of%20sleep..pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">animals that are sleep deprived<\/a> show an increase in their brain cannabinoid receptors, and individuals with depression who committed suicide showed an up-regulation of their cannabinoid receptors on autopsy. These increases are considered compensatory and aim to provide more sites for endocannabinoid binding.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Down-regulation:<\/strong> Occurs when there are fewer receptors available for binding. When over-activated by excessive THC, some receptors move from their location on the cell wall and \u201chide\u201d within. THC use patterns, namely potency and frequency \u2014 as well as a person's unique response to THC \u2014 will determine how quickly and how much tolerance will develop.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wm-article-table-of-contents-header\" id=\"is-tolerance-to-thc-reversible\">\n\tIs tolerance to THC reversible?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>THC tolerance is completely reversible \u2014 it takes a minimum of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC4742341\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">48 hours of THC abstinence<\/a> for cannabinoid receptors to reappear on the cell wall and reverse tolerance build-up. Tolerance to THC is considered \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC3223558\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">regionally selective<\/a>,\u201d meaning that one part of the brain may develop tolerance quicker or slower than another part of the brain.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wm-article-table-of-contents-header\" id=\"how-can-i-tell-if-ive-developed-a-tolerance-to-cannabis\">\n\tHow can I tell if I&#039;ve developed a tolerance to cannabis?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>If you notice that you need higher doses of THC to get the same effects \u2014 and the duration of effects you used to get with a lower dose \u2014 you've likely developed a tolerance.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wm-article-table-of-contents-header\" id=\"how-can-you-avoid-or-fix-tolerance-to-thc\">\n\tHow can you avoid or fix tolerance to THC?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>By down-regulating your cannabinoid receptors with excessive THC use, you lose binding sites for THC. Your \u201cinner cannabis\u201d endocannabinoids have fewer receptor targets as well. This can result in increased mood issues, decreased effects for pain, and disturbed sleep.
