Citronellol is well known as an effective mosquito repellent and has long been used in perfume and beauty products. Research into its medical uses is growing, and it shows potential as a useful anti-inflammatory, anti-tumor, and cardiovascular regulating agent.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wm-article-table-of-contents-header\" id=\"what-is-citronellol\">\n\tWhat is citronellol?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Also referred to as dihydrogeraniol, citronellol occurs naturally in <a href=\"https:\/\/www3.epa.gov\/pesticides\/chem_search\/reg_actions\/reregistration\/fs_PC-021901_1-Feb-97.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">citronella oil<\/a>, an essential oil derived from the leaves and stems of the lemongrass plant. Citronella oil's two main chemotypes, Ceylon and Java, are so named because of the oil's probable origin in Sri Lanka. Citronella oil is produced primarily in Asia, with up to 40% of the world's supply coming from China and Indonesia. Madagascar, Honduras, and Mexico are among the world's other producers of citronella oil.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wm-article-table-of-contents-header\" id=\"citronellol-in-everyday-life\">\n\tCitronellol in everyday life<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The most common way we encounter the citronellol terpene in our everyday lives is when we use <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/20836800\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">mosquito repellent<\/a> on a hot summer day. Citronellol may be included in repellents in candles, sprays, and diffusers. The naturally occurring terpene, classified by the EPA as a <a href=\"https:\/\/npic.orst.edu\/factsheets\/citronellagen.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">minimum risk pesticide<\/a>, may be preferred to formulas that contain DEET and other chemicals.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In addition to its utility in mosquito repellents, citronellol's balance of floral and citrus notes make it a popular scent-enhancing ingredient in perfume and skin-care products such as body oil, after-shave balm, and deodorant soap. If you've ever purchased a skin-care product labeled as \u201ccitrus-scented\u201d there's a good chance that citronellol was an ingredient. You may also have gotten a whiff of citronellol if you've ever burned incense made with citronella oil. There is, however, some controversy about whether citronellol in cosmetics could be a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/20137738\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">skin allergen<\/a>, and European companies are required to declare on product labels if the terpene is an ingredient.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wm-article-table-of-contents-header\" id=\"therapeutic-benefits-of-citronellol\">\n\tTherapeutic benefits of citronellol<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Aside from its widespread usage in mosquito repellents, citronellol may also have tumor-inhibiting and anti-inflammatory effects, each of which warrants further scientific study. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-anti-inflammatory\"><strong>Anti-inflammatory<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Inflammation is often an important component of pain, and animal studies have shown that citronellol <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/22350215\" target=\"_blank\">may reduce pain<\/a> by several different <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/26141506\" target=\"_blank\">anti-inflammatory<\/a> mechanisms. The human body has many different <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/20506077\" target=\"_blank\">inflammatory responses<\/a> and pathways, and laboratory studies in cultured cells have shown that citronellol may fight inflammation by several <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/21597168\" target=\"_blank\">different mechanisms<\/a>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-anti-tumor\"><strong>Anti-tumor<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Citronellol's <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/14668091\" target=\"_blank\">anti-inflammatory<\/a> action may also support its potential to fight tumors, as <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC2803035\/\" target=\"_blank\">inflammation<\/a> contributes to the formation of cancerous cells. Some studies have shown that citronellol could be a viable lung cancer treatment because it is so volatile and it could be absorbed by the lungs <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/28356026\" target=\"_blank\">using an inhaler<\/a>. Additional studies on humans would clarify whether citronellol or its accompanying components such as geraniol can definitively play a role in combating cancerous tumors. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-blood-pressure\"><strong>Blood pressure<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Citronellol appears to have pronounced inhibitory effects on the cardiovascular system, by inhibiting the contraction of <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC4712486\/\" target=\"_blank\">smooth muscle cells<\/a>. This effect could potentially be leveraged to dilate blood vessels and lower <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/20002067\" target=\"_blank\">blood pressure<\/a>, although clinical trials in humans are needed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wm-article-table-of-contents-header\" id=\"role-of-citronellol-in-cannabis\">\n\tRole of citronellol in cannabis<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Citronellol may be present in geraniol varieties of <a href=\"https:\/\/weedmaps.com\/learn\/cannabis-and-your-body\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">cannabis<\/a>, such as Great White Shark, Island Sweet Skunk, and Amnesia Haze. The scent and flavor properties associated with citronellol in cannabis have a lemony citrus base, as lemongrass is the plant origin.
