This terpene may also be also used as a food additive to enhance flavors. Essential oils, such as cypress and valerian, may contain trace quantities of camphene. Camphene's historical uses include fuel for lamps in the 19th century. However, due to the terpene's potential flammability, it is no longer used in this capacity. After the mid-19th century, kerosene replaced camphene as the fuel of choice for lamps. But at one time, camphene was the primary source of fuel for lamps and preferred as a cheaper alternative to whale oil.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-what-does-camphene-smell-like\"><strong>What does camphene smell like?<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The camphene terpene has a damp, pungent, herbal aroma with undertones of pine.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wm-article-table-of-contents-header\" id=\"camphene-in-everyday-life\">\n\tCamphene in everyday life<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>If you've ever been to a summer party where a citronella candle was burning on the patio, then you have probably encountered camphene without realizing it. Employed as a mosquito repellent, <a href=\"https:\/\/www3.epa.gov\/pesticides\/chem_search\/reg_actions\/reregistration\/fs_PC-021901_1-Feb-97.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">citronella oil<\/a> contains camphene and has controversial usages as a minor ingredient in bark collars for dogs. The camphene in these collars is said to calm the dogs and discourage barking, but many veterinarians warn against the use of citronella oil with any pet as it may be toxic to them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Finally, like bisabolol and certain other terpenes, camphene can be a component of skin-care products such as ointments and creams.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wm-article-table-of-contents-header\" id=\"therapeutic-benefits-of-camphene\">\n\tTherapeutic benefits of camphene<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>When combined with vitamin C, camphene may become a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC3658412\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">powerful antioxidant force<\/a> capable of naturally treating <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC5155078\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">stress<\/a>. The terpene has also shown to be useful in treating conditions as diverse as athlete's foot and heart disease.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Additional <strong>camphene benefits<\/strong> include:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-antibacterial\"><strong>Antibacterial<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>One <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/20299764\" target=\"_blank\">2010 study<\/a> evaluated extracts of a few plants that contained camphor and camphene. The research showed that camphene, at least in combination with camphor and other compounds, had antibacterial effectiveness against three types of bacteria. These results suggest that topical cannabis products containing camphene could be beneficial, however, camphene's antibacterial effects have not yet been tested on the human body.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-antifungal\"><strong>Antifungal<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>In combination with sage oil, camphene exhibits <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/27879146\" target=\"_blank\">antifungal potency<\/a> against such conditions as athlete's foot. When mixed into a paste with tulsi, or holy basil, essential oil, camphene can be applied directly to the skin to treat fungal dermatological diseases including dermatitis.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-antioxidant\"><strong>Antioxidant<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Citrus oils including sweet orange and lemon are known for their refreshing scents that invigorate and melt away stress. When combined with citrus oils, camphene has been shown to reduce the oxidative stress that can lead to tissue damage. The holistic Indian system of <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC4535066\/\" target=\"_blank\">Ayurveda<\/a> has known about these effects for millennia. Ayurvedic practitioners tap into camphene-containing juniper berry oil as one of many natural remedies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-respiratory\"><strong>Respiratory<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Within tulsi essential oil, camphene may be beneficial in battling respiratory illnesses such as <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/7194098\" target=\"_blank\">bronchitis<\/a>. In its diluted vapor form, camphene may act as a <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/toxnet.nlm.nih.gov\/cgi-bin\/sis\/search\/a?dbs+hsdb:@term+@DOCNO+900\" target=\"_blank\">cough suppressant<\/a> and anti-congestive tool.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-cardiovascular-treatment\"><strong>Cardiovascular treatment<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Several studies in cells and animals have found camphene acts as a <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC3207810\/\" target=\"_blank\">lipid-lowering <\/a>agent. These findings mean that camphene could treat cardiovascular disease, the leading cause of death worldwide, by lowering \u201cbad\u201d <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC4718691\/\" target=\"_blank\">cholesterol<\/a>, or low-density lipoproteins.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-inflammation\"><strong>Inflammation<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Studies in rodents have shown camphene in combination with other terpenes plays a role in <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/22588049\" target=\"_blank\">reducing inflammation<\/a>, a major component of how people experience pain.
