The piece included a recipe, so it didn't take long for apothecaries and patent medicine producers to begin making and selling tinctures.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A few years later, in 1851, tinctures first appeared in the United States Pharmacopeia \u2014 an almanac with a list of medicinal drugs, their effects, and usage instructions \u2014 under the name <em>Extractum Cannabis Purificatum<\/em>, or \u201cpurified extract of Indian hemp.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Tinctures were such accepted medicine that in the United Kingdom, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hempshopper.com\/en\/19th-century\/90-1890\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\">Queen Victoria's personal physician prescribed a cannabis tincture<\/a> to help relieve her menstrual cramps. The physician wrote, \u201cWhen pure and administered carefully, [cannabis] is one of the most valuable medicines we possess.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In the US, <a href=\"https:\/\/weedmaps.com\/learn\/cannabis-and-its-evolution\/marihuana-tax-act\">the Marihuana Tax Act of 1937<\/a> taxed the possession and transfer of cannabis so outrageously that it was basically outlawed, and cannabis was removed from the US Pharmacopeia four years later.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wm-article-table-of-contents-header\" id=\"how-to-make-cannabis-tinctures\">\n\tHow to make cannabis tinctures<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Making tinctures isn't difficult, but it can take weeks \u2014 so if you're going the homemade route, you can't be in a hurry. Here's a basic cannabis tincture recipe with detailed instructions and tincture dosage.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The ingredients are <a href=\"https:\/\/weedmaps.com\/learn\/dictionary\/flower\">dried, ground flower<\/a> or <a href=\"https:\/\/weedmaps.com\/learn\/dictionary\/extract\">cannabis extract<\/a>, and high-proof ethyl alcohol to use as a solvent. The higher the proof, the more cannabinoids will be absorbed.
